What Is Ductile Iron?
Ductile iron is a kind of cast iron characterized by its high strength, ductility and wear resistance. Due to the spherical (ball-shaped) graphite in the metal, it is resistant to impact, elongation and everyday wear and tear.
Advantages of Ductile Iron Castings
Ductile iron castings combine the processing advantages of a low melting point, good fluidity and machinability. It also has many of the engineering advances of steel including high strength, ductility and wear resistance. These qualities allow for a much higher tensile and yield strength as well as a lower damping capacity.
Ductile Iron Investment Casting Advantages
Near net shape ductile iron investment castings provide the design engineer with the best combination of part design, surface hardening ability, elasticity modulus, corrosion resistance, and strength versus weight ratio. This is all accomplished while maintaining a favorable cost of manufacturing. Additionally, net shape ductile iron gives the design engineer more design freedom and provides the best overall combination of cast and post-cast characteristics. Additional advantages include:
- Design freedom
- Cost effective
- Consistent finalized product
- Non-existent shrink rate
- Prevent the formation of external shrinkage
