Product Description

Grey Cast Iron Pump Housing

Gray iron is the most versatile of all foundry metals. The high carbon content is responsible for ease of melting and casting in the foundry and for ease of machining in subsequent manufacturing. The low degree or absence of shrinkage and high fluidity provide maximum freedom of design for the engineer.

The general composition of gray cast iron is 95% iron by weight with an additional 2.1 to 4% being carbon and 1 to 3% silicon. Manganese and other impurities are also commonly found in or added to molten iron as needed for the diminishing or enhancement of specific properties. Sulfur, for example, is commonly introduced to the molten metal in order to increase hardness, which is otherwise low in most cast iron components.

Green sand molding is frequently the most economical method of producing castings. Although castings up to 500kgs pounds or more can be made in green sand, it generally is used for medium to small size castings. If green sand molds are not sufficiently hard or strong, some mold wall movement may take place during solidification, and shrinkage defects develop.

The shell molding process is also used for making cores, which are used in other types of molds besides shell molds. The primary advantage is the ability to harden the mold or core in contact with a heated metal pattern, improving the accuracy and finish of the casting.

Gray iron casting is used in many market segments, including automotive, agricultural, machinery building, electronics, irrigation, ventilation, architecture, construction and transportation industries

What is a pump casing?

Pump casing
Whether small or large, all pumps are primarily used to move fluids (water, gas, etc.) from the inlet to the outlet by increasing their pressure.
The pump casing is enclosed in the internal parts of the pump using castings. This component is important because it protects the pump interior from the atmosphere to prevent leaks and maintain pressure.
In the case of a centrifugal pump, a cast housing surrounds a rotor that transfers energy to the fluid being processed through an impeller mounted on a rotating shaft.
For positive displacement pumps, the housing rotates or reciprocates the displacement element around.
Especially for submersible pumps, the housing part must be strong enough.

What does Grey Cast Iron Pump Housing need?

The pump casing is a very important part of the pump. Proper cast housing helps improve pump performance and durability. Therefore, everything from the material to the manufacturing process should be chosen carefully.
The pump casing has some core requirements.
First and foremost, the pump room must guarantee corrosion resistance. Since the pump mainly deals with fluid transfer, the casting material of the pump casing must be able to resist corrosion.
Maximize pump efficiency by reducing corrosion
Second, the pump body part also needs to be strong enough to withstand the pressure and stress exerted by the pump during operation.
Pump body part.
Third, the diameter of the pump casing also needs to be large enough to surround the internal machine rotor components with sufficient clearance for installation and efficient operation.
Why are cast iron pump casings more popular in applications?
Among pump casing materials, cast iron is generally trusted by manufacturers to produce casing components because it meets the above requirements.
Cast iron has physical and medical properties suitable for pump casing fabrication.
Corrosion resistance: The gradual increase in temperature makes the liquid more corrosive. The cast iron material retains its properties as a corrosion-resistant cast metal. This property supports the pump to work overtime more efficiently and longer. Cast iron pump casings are especially suitable for high temperature applications.
Strength: As mentioned above, the pump casing needs to be stiff enough to withstand the pressure. Cast iron pump casings have been shown to be fairly strong and able to withstand stress.
Castability: Cast iron material has good castability. It is capable of casting almost any shape and design with a good surface finish. This property allows casting different pump casing applications.
Durability: The cast iron material is very durable over time, so the cast iron pump casing is also durable. They require less replacement and maintenance than other materials.
